Omnissa / VMware Horizon

VIRTUAL DESKTOP INFRASTRUCTURE

One desktop, delivered to any device, anywhere — while the data itself never leaves your datacentre.

VDI moves the desktop off the endpoint and into your datacentre. Staff sign in from an office PC, a laptop at home, a thin client or a tablet and get the same Windows desktop, the same applications and the same files every time. Nothing of consequence is stored on the device in their hands.

Packed Apps designs, builds and supports Horizon environments — now Omnissa Horizon, following the 2024 spin-out of VMware’s end-user computing business from Broadcom. The product and the skills are the same; the licensing paperwork changed. We handle both.

WHAT WE DO

WHERE IT PAYS OFF

Hybrid and remote staff

The same desktop from the office, the kitchen table or a client site — with no VPN-to-a-physical-PC gymnastics and no laptops full of company data on the road.

Contractors and seasonal teams

Spin up ten desktops for a project and delete them when it ends. No procurement cycle, no imaging bench, no kit to chase down afterwards.

Data that must stay put

Where policy, privacy law or a client contract says information cannot sit on an endpoint, VDI keeps it in the datacentre and sends only pixels to the screen.

Ageing hardware

An old PC that only has to run a Horizon client is a perfectly good terminal for years longer, which turns a hardware refresh into a much smaller cheque.

Straight talk

VDI is not automatically cheaper. It shifts money from endpoints to the datacentre and to the people who run it, and it repays you in manageability, security and speed of onboarding. If your team is fifteen people in one office with good PCs, we will very likely tell you to skip it — and suggest something that helps you more.

WHY PACKED APPS

We are independent. We do not carry a vendor quota, so the recommendation you get is the one we would follow ourselves. We have been putting business technology into small organisations since 2001, which means we are just as comfortable talking about the licence renewal, the network underneath it and the person who has to answer the phone when it breaks.

Horizon also does not exist on its own. It needs storage that keeps up, a network that is properly segmented and a hypervisor underneath. We work across VMware Cloud Foundation, Proxmox and UniFi networking, so the whole stack gets designed together rather than in four separate conversations.
